I've read Anne of Green Gables more times than I can count. I still remember getting a boxed set of the complete series for my seventh or eighth birthday - they had pastel covers and came in a pink cardboard box. But here's my confession: I've never read past Anne of Avonlea. So the book version Anne Shirley stored in my imagination never grew up past eighteen. I've seen the movies dozens of times, but I never went back to keep reading the rest of the books. And since I'm usually such a "book before movie" person, it feels like this gaping hole in my book knowledge. So I'm going to read the entire series, from Anne of Green Gables to Rilla of Ingleside, all eight books. It seems like such a funny and overdue project but I'm excited to fill in the gaps and hopefully fall back under the Avonlea spell. No time limit, no expectation of reading all eight back to back with no other books in between, but I'm going to try to make a significant dent in the series before next spring (a sort-of deadline).
I've been thinking way too much about usernames recently - I need to create one for a new project and am stuck. Boring professional ones, I can handle, and while I'm not the most creative gal in the room when it comes to anonymous ones, I can squeak by if necessary. It's the other ones, the middle of the road usernames where you want a little bit of identification but not enough that someone can find out where you went to elementary school. So far my efforts feel like a futile attempt at one of those icebreakers where you need to find adjectives to describe yourself to an entire room. And I see so many witty usernames floating around that I know I'm overthinking this to a whole other degree.
I've been feeling a bit quiet lately - I was doing a bit of writing but got stalled and found myself reading some less than stellar stuff (books from the local library which made me feel even worse about the state of my writing) - so when I saw this meme on slaymesoftly's journal I jumped at it.
Here's how this works: Comment with your favorite color and I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better. Update your journal with the answers to the questions. Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions!
I gave her my favorite color of green (less emerald, more grass) and here are the questions (below the cut if you're so inclined).
Twelve days before I leave for my big work trip - equal parts excited and nervous (not about the trip so much as the travelling because I'm going across the world and will be spending almost an entire day en route). This will make my spring trip to Europe hopefully seem like a little nothing, travel time wise.
Why do people come to work when sick? Like really stay-home gross sick, not mild cold sick? Because it's less than two days until five days of not working (and two holiday parties and Christmas things) and my throat is doing this scratchy thing. I'm drinking gallons of tea because holiday parties + big trip + lots of work between all those things = zero time for illness. Zero. Of course I'm pretty sure this happens every single year - leading to a waffling back a d forth anout whether or not to go to said parties, before feeling better at the almost last minute. So perhaps it's somewhat in my head.
Yesterday I spent hours with my laptop and realized that wrting is just as essential to my "levelness" as running. While I was travelling, I didn't write anything, not even a disconnected snippet, and was I ever feeling it when I came home. I've been tinkering with this s7/flashback to s6 fic that's wants to be a spuffy fic with a warehouse13 (or torchwood) tie-in despite my efforts to keep it a one fandom per fic story. The post-gift story I've been reworking for ages is slowly creeping towards an end. I have a few more transition scenes but I think a lot of the big stuff is written.
I'm on day three of a five day work trip. Which means long days and evenings spent watching too many episodes of shows I've been meaning to watch. This trip it's Torchwood and even though I'm only halfway through the first season, I already want to read fic. Does anyone have any recs (either work or author)? And more to the point, any crossover fics?
Happy Thanksgiving to anyone celebrating the holiday!
This year it'll be me and my parents - no trips around the state to visit relatives and no complicated schedule coordination - just a quiet little evening. And I'm okay with it. Obviously it's different without my grandmother but we never made a big production out of Thanksgiving - it was usually the four of us anyway. For anyone travelling, be safe and have fun at your ultimate destination!
Checking in after the hurricane: I still have power (knock on wood) but there's a lot of damage in my town and neighboring towns and I'm keeping everything charged just in case. I don't really have anything to report - I've been in the house since Sunday and have been tackling projects that had been put off for ages. Yesterday I sorted through papers that had been taking up space in a drawer for close to a year - mostly silly receipts and notes from 2011 but there was also a birthday card from my grandmom which made me tear up a bit. I've reorganized bookshelves (how those get so cluttered I don't understand) with btvs season 4 in the background. I'm not sure when Pangs became my personal pre-Thanksgiving tradition (even though I moved it up a bit this year) but it's one of those episodes that don't get old.
I haven't turned on my television in about a week, which isn't terribly abnormal but I also haven't touched my laptop in nearly two weeks (iPad has been my go-to more and more). Sunday I made up for it and watched the entire Spartacus prequel (Gods of the Arena), even though I had only planned to watch one episode. I was running errands Friday in one of the big box stores in town, wandered into the movie aisle because I'm trying to get my mom a complete series for her birthday and wanted to see what was available, and found it. The entire season was reasonably priced, so I bought them on dvd, which I haven't done in a while because the digital versions are so much easier to transport/store.
I also love seeing actors I like in different roles and Spartacus has three "familiars" -- Lucy Lawless (Xena), John Hannah (The Mummy) and Jaime Murray (Warehouse 13). So I had a few geeky moments where shows overlapped but not too many. It's not a light show but it was engrossing. I haven't watched the series proper, but it's going on my to-watch list.
Tonight I have the first episode of Sherlock season 2 to watch and a new Buffy comic to read. Looks like I'll be quietly geeking out for a little while long.
Summary: Starts midway through Dead Things. She wanted to break everything until it was unrecognizable.
Author’s Note: Written for seasonal_spuffy (Spring 2012). Some lines borrowed from the actual episode. Title comes from the song “Asleep on the Wind” by Jimmy Webb. “Our lives might last until the love begins / So stay alive and let me try as hard as you do”
